“Discipline in Spirituality” by Rick Sanders

HH52-5 Spiritual Practices

We have heard of training for a sport or a vocation. We have heard of the spanking of a child. Have we heard of spiritual discipline?

God give several examples of discipline. “I will discipline you with justice; I cannot let you go unpunished.” This is punishment through justice. Our court system is set up for this for example.

God is serious when he disciplines. “I have wounded you cruelly, as though you were my enemy. For your sins are many, and your guilt is great. Why do you protest your punishment – this wound that has no cure? I have had to punish you because your sins are many, and your guilt is great.”

Yet God and His believers know the disapline is training. “You disciplined me severely, like a calf that needs training for the yoke.”

For, God loves His creation. “I often have to punish him, but I still love him.”

All these verses can be found in the New Living Translation of the Bible in Jeremiah 30 and 31. Read the verses in context to get even more understanding of God’s attitude toward discipline.
